Diamond Brite Exposed Aggregate Pool Finishes…

All you add is the perfect setting. There’s more to a great pool finish than meets the eye. A great pool finish is durable, comfortable, easily maintained, and pleasing to the eye. Diamond Brite from SGM is all that and more. Diamond Brite combines natural quartz aggregates. polymer-modified cement and non-fading Diamond quartz in a stunning variety of colors. The result is a unique finish that stands up to the harshest pool environments while providing years of enjoyment.

The lasting beauty and durability of a diamond. Unlike traditional marble-based pool plasters, Diamond Brite is made with natural quartz, one of nature’s hardest and purest minerals. Marble aggregates are easily dissolved by pool chemicals causing unsightly etching and rapid deterioration. Diamond Brite’s insoluble quartz aggregate is unaffected by the harshest pool chemicals and resists permanent staining. Also, the Diamond Quartz accent colors won’t rust, rub off or fade like other colored aggregates because our coating technology produces a tough, permanently bonded colored aggregate. Finally, state-of-the-art polymer modification of Diamond Brite’s cement increases hardness, improves bonding and reduces water penetration. All this adds up to a beautiful yet durable pool finish.

Comfort, safety, security.

You’ll have an added sense of security knowing that your pool is comfortable and slip resistant. Because SGM selects quartz aggregates that are smaller than pebble surfaces, the surface is comfortable to bather’s feet. And in this age of safety consciousness, Diamond Brite is the ideal surface where wet, slippery conditions are a concern.

Relax and enjoy.

In developing Diamond Brite, SGM made ease of maintenance a top priority. The impervious quartz used in Diamond Brite resists stains and etching caused by harsh pool chemicals. And, unlike existing pool plasters, Diamond Brite pools can be drained and cleaned without being damaged. Additionally, the accent colors in Diamond Brite give the surface a variegated appearance, masking the slight imperfections that are readily apparent in traditional finishes.

Versatility

Diamond Brite offers a selection of tranquil colors that are factory blended to perfection. And if you’re so inclined, we can even custom blend our premium finish to express a unique poolscape. Diamond Brite can help you achieve an environment of tranquility and beauty, sensible practicality and superior longevity.

Advantages

Diamond Brite quartz aggregate has millions of brilliantly colored quartz granules equaling more durability and lasting color. Diamond Brite invokes the richest quartz color showing all the way through to the bottom of the pool, spa, or fountain. Diamond Brite’s colored quartz appearance is enhanced with time.

Warranty

You can rest assured that the highest quality products have been used and is supported by the best warranty program in the industry. It’s a sign of our commitment to achieve the highest quality standards in all our swimming pool and spa finishes.

Color and its effects on the water is a priority concern. Whether you select traditional plaster, quartz, or pebble, color ultimately will compliment the statement or mood you desire to achieve. Further, will also enhance the richness, beauty, and intensity of your pool for years to come. Medium grey color has been the most popular since its introduction to swimming pools over three decades ago. This was, and still is, accomplished by adding black pigment to the traditional white plaster mix until the desired shade is achieved. Created and dubbed “Tahoe blue” by a well known plastering contractor in the early 70′s, it’s still the most widely selected color today. Under different names, it may be introduced through manufactured color packs or in premixed blends with your quartz or pebble finish.

Today colors for the interior swimming pool come in all shades and hues for traditional plaster or other types of finishes. Most popular, other than the shades of grey (Tahoe Blues), are the array of actual blue color. By manipulating a blue color’s intensity we can provide you with an endless amount of shades. Remember that color and its affect is not limited to and only begins with your vision, a photo, and a color swatch.. Intensity, value, shade, and what you may anticipate depends on time of day, weather, water clarity, depth of pool, and surrounding environment after your pool is filled. Ask your plastering contractors’ opinion, base on their experience, which color they think is a good choice for your pool, what you envision, and take into consideration.

Always remember that your new colored surface is not an opaque paint, but made up of natural minerals subject to certain inherent characteristics. Colored plaster is always subject to variations in shade due to weather conditions during its application, surface its applied to, and water chemistry once it’s filled. With all that said , let us help you select the right color and hue your imagination desires.

When I met with Scott and Heidi from Davis California, as most, they were working with a budget and wanted to maximize there dollar. They definitely wanted a surface superior to regular plaster but smooth to the touch. They also wanted to replace the tile, but keep the original coping stones.

Before draining there pool it was apparent that there were numerous hallow areas that weren’t bonding. After going over there options we drained the pool and removed all of them.

We then removed tile, sandblasted thoroughly, cut old suction drain for a new channel drain, power washed entire surface, inspect, and bond coated pool.

The next day the perimeter waterline was carefully floated achieving an even surface, as all tile jobs should be, and the tile was meticulously set.

As you can see the coping is old and tainted. They felt, as I agree, that the shape of the pool would be much more complimented with the indigenous style of the original coping stones. We had Erma come in and power wash, color seal, and meticulously apply fresh mastic around the perimeter. The best girl for the job!

Finally, after suggesting to add a little color and diamond shaped accent tiles on steps (at no extra cost), we plastered pool with Diamond Brite (light grey) and filled.

Traditional pool plaster is white. With the addition of color & additives this surface provides an economical choice for pool resurfacing

Plaster is the most widely used and economical
choice for today’s swimming pool surface.

Before the technology of Quartz swimming pool surfaces, pebble surfaces, and the modified additives for traditional pool plaster, there was only white plaster. Even with today’s’ marketing of the others, plaster is still the most widely used and is still the most economical choice for today’s swimming pool surface. The creamy blend of Portland white cement and crushed marble sand produces a smooth silky look as well as texture. This combination of material produces a surface with an average life span of 9 to 12 years. I’ve seen some surfaces hold it’s integrity for up to 20 years. As with all swimming pool surfaces, maintaining proper pool chemistry is paramount to longevity and family enjoyment.

Sacramento homeowners choose standard pool plaster for the traditional look and price. There are a couple of disadvantages of traditional pool plaster:

Discoloration with age.

Longevity – (9 – 12 years)

To maximize the life of traditional plaster buyers would have to consider other variables than just water clarity as part of there maintenance. With close observation and care for the plaster (PH, Alkalinity, and weekly maintenance) some customers can get fifteen plus years of usage before the needing to resurface their swimming pool. For a minimal expense, and in most cases practicality, the addition of products like “Silicone Shield” and Pozzolan additives can increase the life and resistance to dis-colorization of the plaster.

Quartz Pool Finishes are one of the longest lasting pool surfaces today. Diamonds are the only harder stone than quartz. A great option for increased pool plaster life and resistance to the elements (Reno, NV)

Quartz products are another consideration for a pool surface.

There’s traditional smooth plaster, addition of polymers for longevity, pebble surfaces, and finally the quartz surface which is a surface with a cost in between. Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the earth’s continental crust. Why is it so abundant? Simply because it can with stand all that nature’s had to offer one century over the next. Quartz is considered by scientists to be one of the strongest minerals found. Our industry realizes, when crushed, quartz can also be mixed with cement for a more durable lasting pool plaster surface. These quartz crystal have been tested and tried in situations emulating an environment found in the conditions subject to pool water and it’s chemistry. Data has shown that quartz will sustain the most harsh conditions than any mineral other than diamonds. When mixed with plaster, applied, and exposed with a mist of water, the surface will produce an array of colored crystals that sparkle (like diamonds) under the suns light. Nevertheless, a quartz surface is only as good as the cement it’s mixed with. Though the quartz is defiantly stronger than the replacement of sand in a traditional plaster mix, the cement, which holds it all together, is still just your average pool blend cement. Therefore pool blend cement is subject to a loss of it’s integrity with time. Be sure that your pool contractor will compliment these two components with a strengthening additive. Our Diamond Brite is the longest quartz product on the market today. With a price range normally a third extra than the cost of a traditional plaster surface, and a third less than the cost of a pebble surface, it’s considered to be the best bang for the buck. It has the smoothness of plaster with the longevity of a pebble finish, and the lush look of a blanket of quartz.

Diamond Brite contains a modified polymer cement premixed with colored quartz.. Quartz, being the second strongest mineral besides diamonds, replaces the conventional marble sand found in a regular plaster mix, and the pebbles found in a pebble surface. The matrix (adhesive power) from polymers in Diamond Brite’s cement, and durability of the dense quartz will help sustain the abuse of harsh water chemistry with age without compromising a smooth surface. Take into consideration, if you have to have that dense pebble look and are not willing to compromise one good quality over another, than the quartz surface may not be the way to go.

The name/brand Pebble Tec® has become synonymous for exposed aggregate surfaces used in swimming pools. Pebble Tec® company was the first to recognize that by adding small polished pebbles to pool plaster increases the surface life of the pool finish. Additionally, the use of pebbles in the plaster provides uniformity in the color of the finish. Essentially, exposed aggregate surfaces are the combination of various sizes of round polished rocks, plaster, dye packs and in some cases polymer or pozzalan additives to extend the life of the surface.

Once applied, to the pool surface it is then troweled, the cement washed with a mist of water to expose the pebbles, re-troweled or pack by the plasters and repeated with a mist wash. This procedure produces a surface with an array of pebble hues packed tightly exposing an elegant surface that will out last a traditional plaster mix.

Pebble surfaces come in an array of colors to choose from as well as size of pebble and texture. Remember, the larger the pebbles the more textured the surface. The smaller pebbles the smoother the surface. Unless polished with diamond abrasive discs, all pebble finishes do have a textured feel, and depending on your applicators touch, some may have more than others. Always consider the amount of usage to your pool, depth for buoyancy of swimmers, and design when choosing the size of the stone and whether you choose to have it polished. For example you may not want to have a pebble finish in a shallow pool you intend to play volleyball in.

Choosing the right product means more to us that Its’ marketing power. Our River Rock and StoneScapes mini pebble contain the right size for maximum smoothness and is diverse for polishing when considered, has many colors and assorted pebbles to choose from, and come in premixed formulas for consistency. Most important both are modified with polymer additives for durability, long lasting strength, and confidence to offer the best warranty program in the industry.

Traditional plaster. Before the technology of DiamondBrite’s Quartz, River Rock pebble, StoneScapes, Pebble Tech and modified additives, there was only plaster. Even with today’s’ marketing of the others, plaster is still the most widely used and is also the most economical choice for today’s swimming pool surface. The creamy blend of Portland white cement and crushed marble sand produces a smooth silky look as well as texture. As always, our industry seeks out resolutions to some of the less admirable adherent traits of the traditional plaster mix. These traits are discoloration and the lack of longevity. To maximize the life of traditional plaster buyers would have to consider other variables than just water clarity as part of there maintenance. With close observation and care for the plaster (PH, Alkalinity, and weekly maintenance) some customers can get fifteen plus years to the usage before the integrity of the surface is gone. Since today’s world doesn’t always provide enough hours in our days or the finances, regular plaster may not be a practical choice for some.

Modified additives. There are additives used for the regular plaster mix that do help produce positive results. Polymeres and or pozzolans have been introduce to the mix and tested in the past for cements other than swimming pool plaster. These special blends have been proven to add substantial strength to the cements performance over documented time. When added to a traditional plaster mix it helps prevent the precipitation of the important bi-products of plaster during its curing and aging process. One of them being the natural salts of the cement known as calcium hydroxide better known by pool service technicians as plaster dust during the first weeks after applying the plaster. Our silicone shields additive seals the cement which helps convert this Hydroxide into less soluble compounds for a more durable finish.

Pebble finishes. Pebble, rock, stone, or which ever name given is a surface consisting of beautifully assorted small polished or tumbled pebbles mixed with cement and a polymer additive. Once applied to the pool surface it is then troweled, the cement washed with a mist of water to expose the pebbles, re-troweled or pack by the plasters and repeated with a mist wash. Once achieved correctly this procedure produces a surface with an array of pebble hues packed tightly exposing an elegant surface that will out last a traditional plaster mix. Pebble surfaces come in array of colors to choose from as well as size of pebble and texture. Remember, the larger the stone the more course the surface. The smaller pebbles the smoother the surface. Unless polished with disks all pebble finishes do have a textured feel, and depending on your applicators touch, some may have more than others. Most important both are modified with polymer additives for durability, long lasting strength, and confidence to offer the best warranty program in the industry.

Quartz surfaces. Quartz products are another consideration for a pool surface. Now, there’s traditional smooth plaster with added polymers for longevity, and pebble surfaces for even more longevity with beautifully sorted exposed pebbles. Well, DiamondBrite is the longest quartz product on the market today. With a price range normally a third extra than the cost of plaster, and a third less than the cost of pebble, it’s considered to be the best bang for the buck. It has the smoothness of plaster with the longevity of a pebble finish. DiamondBrite contains a modified polymer cement premixed with colored quartz..
Choosing the right brand. With so many different products it can be overwhelming choosing the right one. The power of marketing comes into play, but always remember each product is only as good as it’s applicators.

The secret to a long lasting swimming pool finish is the quality of the pool plaster. Silicone Shield is an economical pool life extender.

The secret to a long lasting swimming pool finish is the quality of the pool plaster. The brilliant white, and ultra smooth finish of a brand new pool, rapidly deteriorates in the harsh pool water chemistry. This can be minimized with the addition of Blue Terra’s “Silicone Shield.”

Generation Pool Plastering has been providing homeowners in Sacramento, Roseville and Folsom, this economical pool plaster additive for years. Let us explain how this works.

How Silicone Shield Works

SILICONE SHIELD preserves the natural beauty of new pool plaster finishes. As pool finishes without SILICONE SHIELD age, discolor and etch, the difference in a SILICONE SHIELD pool is truly amazing.

SILICONE SHIELD is a proprietary blend of silicone treated mineral powers that is added at the jobsite to an-industry-standard cement-based plaster mix. A plaster mix of White Type I Portland cement, marble aggregate and SILICONE SHIELD forms an impenetrable surface that is far more resilient than other mix designs to both the erosive and corrosive effects of swimming pool water.

Silicone is a natural deterrent to bacteria and algae growth reducing long term plaster staining.

The test pool shown is one year old. It was drained and photograph to evaluate the performance of the Silicone Shield modified sections of the pool. The pool was divided into four sections and plastered the same day using two types of Type I White Portland Cement and two types of industry standard white aggregate. Silicone Shield was added to the mixes in sections three and four. The pool was filled with water and used for one year. The pool water was closely monitored. The water’s chemical balance was kept within APSP Standards, by a professional pool service company.
