Color and its effects on the water is a priority concern. Whether you select traditional plaster, quartz, or pebble, color ultimately will compliment the statement or mood you desire to achieve. Further, will also enhance the richness, beauty, and intensity of  your pool for years to come. Medium grey color has been the most popular since its introduction to swimming pools over three decades ago. This was, and still is, accomplished by adding black pigment to the traditional white plaster mix until the desired shade is achieved. Created and  dubbed “Tahoe blue” by a well known plastering contractor in the early 70′s, it’s still the most widely selected color today. Under different names, it may be introduced through manufactured color packs or in premixed blends with your quartz or pebble finish.

Today colors for the interior swimming pool come in all shades and hues for traditional plaster or other types of finishes. Most popular, other than the shades of grey (Tahoe Blues), are the array of actual blue color. By manipulating a blue color’s intensity we can provide you with an endless amount of shades. Remember that color and its affect is not limited to and only begins with your vision, a photo, and a color swatch.. Before draining there pool it was apparent that there were numerous hallow areas that weren’t bonding. After going over there options we drained the pool and removed all of them.

We then removed tile, sandblasted thoroughly, cut old suction drain for a new channel drain, power washed entire surface, inspect, and bond coated pool.

The next day the perimeter waterline was carefully floated achieving an even surface, as all tile jobs should be, and the tile was meticulously set.

As you can see the coping is old and tainted. They felt, as I agree, that the shape of the pool would be much more complimented with the indigenous style of the original coping stones. We had Erma come in and power wash, color seal, and meticulously apply fresh mastic around the perimeter. The best girl for the job!

Finally, after suggesting to add a little color and diamond shaped accent tiles on steps (at no extra cost), we plastered pool with Diamond Brite (light grey) and filled.

Before the technology of  Quartz swimming pool surfaces,  pebble surfaces, and the modified additives for traditional pool plaster, there was only white plaster. Even with today’s’ marketing of the others, plaster is still the most widely used and is still the most economical choice for today’s swimming pool surface. The creamy blend of Portland white cement and crushed marble sand produces a smooth silky look as well as texture. This combination of material produces a surface with an average life span of 9  to 12 years. I’ve seen some surfaces hold it’s integrity for up to 20 years. As with all swimming pool surfaces, maintaining proper pool chemistry is paramount to longevity and family enjoyment.

Sacramento homeowners choose standard pool plaster for the traditional look and price.  There are a couple of disadvantages of traditional pool plaster:

1. Discoloration with age.
2. Longevity – (9 – 12 years)

To maximize the life of traditional plaster buyers would have to consider other variables than just water clarity as part of there maintenance. With close observation and care for the plaster (PH, Alkalinity, and weekly maintenance) some customers can get fifteen plus years of usage before the needing to resurface their swimming pool. For a minimal expense, and in most cases practicality, the addition of products like “Silicone Shield” and Pozzolan additives can increase the life and resistance to dis-colorization of the plaster.

There’s traditional smooth plaster, addition of polymers for longevity, pebble surfaces, and finally the quartz surface which is a surface with a cost in between. Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the earth’s continental crust. Why is it so abundant? Simply because it can with stand all that nature’s had to offer one century over the next. Quartz  is considered by scientists to be one of the strongest minerals found. Our industry realizes, when crushed, quartz can also be mixed with cement for a more durable lasting pool plaster surface.  These quartz crystal have been tested and tried in situations emulating an environment found in the conditions subject to pool water and it’s chemistry. Data has shown that quartz will sustain the most harsh conditions than any mineral other than diamonds. When mixed with plaster, applied, and exposed with a mist of water, the surface will produce an array of colored crystals that sparkle (like diamonds) under the suns light. Nevertheless, a quartz surface is only as good as the cement it’s mixed with. Though the quartz is defiantly stronger than the replacement of sand in a traditional plaster mix, the cement, which holds it all together, is still just your average pool blend cement. Therefore pool blend cement is subject to a loss of it’s integrity with time. Be sure that your pool contractor will compliment these two components with a strengthening additive. Our Diamond Brite is the longest quartz product on the market today. With a price range normally a third extra than the cost of a traditional plaster surface, and a third less than the cost of a pebble surface, it’s considered to be the best bang for the buck. It has the smoothness of plaster with the longevity of a pebble finish, and the lush look of a blanket of quartz.

How Silicone Shield Works

SILICONE SHIELD preserves the natural beauty of new pool plaster finishes. As pool finishes without SILICONE SHIELD age, discolor and etch, the difference in a SILICONE SHIELD pool is truly amazing.

SILICONE SHIELD is a proprietary blend of silicone treated mineral powers that is added at the jobsite to an-industry-standard cement-based plaster mix. A plaster mix of White Type I Portland cement, marble aggregate and SILICONE SHIELD forms an impenetrable surface that is far more resilient than other mix designs to both the erosive and corrosive effects of swimming pool water.

Silicone is a natural deterrent to bacteria and algae growth reducing long term plaster staining.

The test pool shown is one year old. It was drained and photograph to evaluate the performance of the Silicone Shield modified sections of the pool. The pool was divided into four sections and plastered the same day using two types of Type I White Portland Cement and two types of industry standard white aggregate. Silicone Shield was added to the mixes in sections three and four. The pool was filled with water and used for one year. The pool water was closely monitored. The water’s chemical balance was kept within APSP Standards, by a professional pool service company.
